It has been a long while since I watched an entire episode of Saturday Night Live! One of my favorite comedians Molly Shannonās guest host appearance this week made it must-see-TV. Her character Sally OāMalley is a hoot. However, current cast member Heidi Gardner had me laughing out loud.
Heidi played āthe co-worker whoās extremely busy doing seemingly nothing.ā She is 39-years old and played the character like a modern Lucille Ball. The skit was meant to illustrate the current news of companies demanding workers return to the office, but it spoke to way more than that. And having just rolled off a consulting project where I had a seat at the corporate table, with a birdās eye view to some Millenial work habits, I am not worried people are working too hard today, I am worried that they are working too frazzled, too unfocused, too demanding on themselves and their own co-workers. This generation needs to rethink work! Pronto. Well, thatās why I write on this topic and work in this field.
But, more about meā¦.
When I watched this clip, what struck me was, this isnāt just TODAYās early to mid-career cohort, this looked like a 30-year-old ME when I was in the thick of corporate life trying to do everything, including get promoted and start a family. Another reason I was so keen to create Monumental Me. If only, I had a personal coach who had helped me to slow down, re-organize, work smarter, and prioritize my wellbeing. Not just by booking the Google masseuse once in a while (though that was a great perk!), but to have had access to someone who would have shown me real tools to approach work in a productive and healthy manner before I skidded down the road to Burnout (do not pass Go, do not collect $200) at 36.
Thatās why we created the tools you can use. Check them out, and try one out! But first, have a laugh, and let me know if this person looks familiar to you today, or is it you from your former work-life and if so, do you have advice for evolving away from the persona of Extremely Busy Doing Seemingly Nothing Co-Worker? We do!
Take a peak:
Be well,
