Forgiveness is key to wellbeing. It can help people open the door to strong relationships and lasting joy.
Forgiveness - Why it matters
Forgiveness is one of the 12 behaviors studies have shown to enhance wellbeing and a sense of happiness, which leads to many benefits - including enhancing a greater sense of confidence and resilience.
According to distinguished professor and researcher Sonia Lyubomirsky, Ph.D., “Forgiving people are less likely to be hateful, depressed, hostile, anxious, angry, and neurotic.” She describes forgiveness as a decision to let go of ill-will and the desire for revenge, and to replace those feelings with more positive attitudes and behaviors. “Forgiveness can help people move on from hurt and open the door to strong relationships and lasting joy.”
There’s no way to avoid feelings of being wronged by another. But holding on to pain and anger only harms us. It’s important to understand that forgiving someone is not the equivalent of condoning or forgetting their behavior. How we forgive will vary depending on each situation, but the other person doesn't even have to know you forgave them for you to reap the benefits of letting go of your negative emotions. Ultimately, forgiving is a gift we give ourselves.
